BASS.
The Monmouth Beach Car Topper Fishing Club is
sponsoring their annual tournament being held next weekend at
Bahrs. Applications can be picked up t most tackle shops in the area as
well as Bahrs Restaurant. The captains meeting takes place Friday October 6th
and there is an informal "clam bake & fish Fry" on Sunday to wrap things
up.
Striped
Bass
Striper fishing is really starting to heat up
again. They are being taken under the bridges and in the rip on live eels.
Some big fish have been caught along the surf in Sea Bright & Monmouth
Beach. The surf fisherman seem to be having luck with swimming plugs. Pat Guba
of Middletown reports that he had three keepers early Sunday at the North
Beach of Sandy Hook. Pat was using rebel swimming plugs. John Matteucci landed a
few keepers by boat at the rip on Saturday late morning at the end of
the outgoing tide. Sunday saw some good action at the Sea Bright Bridge.
Fluke
Best fishing at the North end
of the Hook in years!
I asked Captain Stan of the Elaine B when he is
going to switch over to blackfish, and he told me that the Fluking is so good
that he is going to keep at it until the season is over. On one trip last week,
fishing around the tip of the Hook, his party boat customers all had close to
their limits and all of the fish caught where between 3 and 5 pounds!! Last
Saturday Greg Wasileski of Middletown weighed in a 8.6 lb fluke also caught at
the tip of the hook on his boat. Greg said that he hooked it with a
finesse lure jigging for Stripers.
At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. George Bachert said
Friday and Saturday provided his best fluking of the season on the Fishermen. Ed
Christensen of Wayne boated an 81/4-pounder Friday, and Tim Berry of Ramsey had
a 71/8-pounder Saturday when Bachert's last drift close to the wash produced
over 100 keepers. Weakfish The
weakfish fishery has been holding up great. The charter boats Hyper Striper
brought in a nice catch for his party on Monday. Captain Pete has been using
sandworms in the Raritan Reach Channel. Snapper Blues Getting Bigger Snappers are at their peak this time of year. Try some spearing and
some light tackle of any dock and you will be in for some action.
Snappers make great weakfish bait livelining. Tuna Some good reports are coming in from the canyons. Eric Hecht of
Atlantic Highlands reported in on Sunday with yellowfins as did Donny Hager
Junior of the SeaFox also out of Atlantic Highlands Harbor. The also have been
some reports of an unusual amount of swordfish being caught in the Hudson while
chunking at night. We have not seen any here but boats done in Point Pleasant
have been reporting multiple hook ups last week. Dave Carraro from Middletown
has been fishing up in Cape Cod for Giant Tuna this month. So far he has caught
2 fish between 500 and 750 pounds. Dave has been fishing about 25
miles off of Hyanisport.

Now is the time to enjoy fishing at the Jersey
Shore! The huge summer crowds are gone but the fish aren't. Fishing this time of
year offers many poosibilities in the rivers, bays & offshore. Fly Fisherman
have been having fun with false albacore tuna in the surf and
shoals.
Fluke
Most of the fluke have been taken off of Seabright
this weekend. Some big fish were had. We weighed in a 9.3 lb fluke caught off of
the bug light on Friday. It was caught on a live killie, this was unusual
because most of the fleet was a couple miles away in the ocean.
Weakfish
John Matteucci & Steve Chiulli loaded up on
weakfish catching their limit using sandworms and rubber jigs. Look for weakfish
in the rivers as well. Jeff Brauer, Highlands, had a nice day up the Navesink
catching a dozen or so nice keepers on Saturday. He said that it was hot on the
in coming tide. He drifted over one "whole" neaer buouy 28 and had a hit every
drift until he ran out of worms. The action died on the change of the
tide.
Albacore
Don Devine of Little Silver, has been releasing
"Albies" in the early mornig hours. He has been finding them at roamer shoals
and the false hook. He is one of the growing population of avid fly fisherman in
our saltwater environment. Look for more reports from Donald.
September 13, 2000 This was another
great week for fishing!! So far it September has provided us with the "Summer we
never had". The weekfishing has been strong still, although the sand worm supply
has been very tight. A combination of high tides in Maine, where the creepy
crawlers are harvested, and a bumper blueberry season has deminished the
availability of worms for New Jersey Fisherman. The worm diggers in Maine
traditionally take time off of the water to help with the seasonal blueberry
picking. Optional baits includee squid, live snappers and peanut bunker,
live or dead. Fluke have been plentiful for those willing to fish in the ocean
with killies. Tuna Rick, Chris, & Dave Gmoch
along with Kevin Meyerhoff and Dave Guiga fish the Hudson Canyon on the
"Tanquility from Middletown. They had a terrific catch of yellowfins and Big
Eyes. The heaviest being 145 lb big eye which was already collard and ready for
sushi. Total weight should have been over 200 lbs. Short report
this week, Don't forget the bass tourney in October. http://bahrs.com/fistour20.html

Labor Day weekend fishing end with a big bang!
Everybody was celebrating the end of summer with notable good catches in all
departments. The canyon fishing being consistently hot in 2000. Here are
some good weather links for offshore:
Fluke
The Sea Bright Reef and the Shrewsbury Rocks
produced the best catches of the season that I have heard. Some were drifting
killies and some boats were actually anchored fishing for sea bass and bringing
in both nice size sea bass (11/2 lbs) and fluke. One fisherman reported 5
keepers all in the 4-6lb range! Joe Pace of Little Silver reported Fluke in the
Sandy Hook Rip as well as sea bass. Greg Wasileski, Colts Neck, weighed in a
wopper on Sunday, a 10.8 lb fluke. He caught it in the Sandy Hook Channel
jigging rubber finess lures.
Weakfish
John
Matteucci hammered the weakies at the 12 buoy. He found a nice schooled up
pocket which enabled him to quickly fill his cooler. Using sandworms and light
tackle his biggest was 8lbs. He Also hooked some stripers on this trip too. Dave
Cosgrove, Hoboken reports in from Monday Labor Day fishing with his fiancé Jenn
Manzi, Ocean, "Jen and I caught 7 weakfish, three were in the 6-8 pound range
(ask Ed). Tossed back a lot of shorts. Most were caught about a
half mile off the Navy Pier in the Channel, drifting across the Channel from
NW to SE, same exact spot every time." He was also using sand
worms.
Tuna
We had good weigh-ins and reports from all of our
regular offshore fisherman. Shark Byte 4 was the first to dock with all deck
compartments on his 60' Viking filled with long fins, yellowfins and one nice
big eye 129lbs. Owner Pete Cherasia of Rumson, was fishing with some of his
regular crew plus Chris Wood and Brian Rice, Bob, and Phil Lidlow.
Jerry Bragger on the "Georgia Peach", Middletown,
boated mostly yellowfins and a couple long fins. Also fishing the Hudson.
The Stavola Brothers of Middletown also weighed in
some more Yellowfins from the Canyon on Sunday.
